I hope these high profile aren't reflecting poorly on all of the hardworking, high quality teachers out there. ~Beth | | Comments of the Week: Don't Teachers Deserve Free Speech in Their Personal Lives? A slew of strong opinions poured in when I brought up the teacher who was recently fired for venting about her students on Facebook. Most commenters seemed to agree with me that she went too far and deserved to face consequences for her actions. But a few dissenters brought up interesting points, such as: Although it may or may not have been "professional" to post comments regarding her feelings toward her students. FB is a public forum but a "personal" web page. I think that you should be able to say whatever you feel on your "personal" web page as what goes on in someones personal life should be kept very separate from their "professional" life. If you can't express your personal thoughts on your own time, when would be an appropriate time to do so?? No this shouldn't have impacted her professional career as her thoughts didn't affect her ability as an educator. Do you censor yourself online, in light of your role as an educator? Personally, I always keep it in the back of my mind that my typed words could be forwarded, misunderstood, or taken out of context. It's better to err on the side of cautious, don't you agree?...
