From Mary Shomon, your Guide to Thyroid Disease
Dear Readers, When you think about thyroid disease, the first word that doesn't normally come to mind is "controversy," but it could! Thyroid disease actually has a number of long-standing controversies, and this week's issue takes a look at some of these thyroid hot topics. Also check out the new info on autoimmune disease from the European Journal of Endocrinology. Live well, Mary PS -- And to those who celebrate, a blessed Passover and Easter this week

The Normal TSH Level Controversy
At most laboratories in the U.S., the "normal" TSH range still runs from approximately 5. to 5.0. But the concept of the normal reference range is still a raging controversy, and recommendations to narrow the range made a decade ago are still being resisted. How many people are actually hypothyroid, if the recommended narrower range were adopted? The answer will shock you.

The Iodine Controversy
We frequently hear that iodine is the "go-to" supplement for anyone with thyroid disease. Whether it's a doctor, or a health food store clerk, it seems everyone is promoting iodine as a one-stop cure-all for all things thyroid. Is iodine the answer?

Coconut Oil Controversy
Is coconut oil a near-miraculous weight loss aid and cure for various health conditions? Is it just another "good fat?" Or is it an artery-clogger, brimming with saturated fat? When you talk to the experts, whether it's holistic health expert Dr. Ken Woliner, or coconut oil guru Dr. Bruce Fife, you get very different opinions. Find out whether coconut oil is healthy or just hype...

The Soy / Thyroid Controversy
The issue of whether soy foods and supplements are harmful or dangerous to thyroid health is controversial. Here is a look at the controversy over soy, phytoestrogens, and isoflavone-rich foods and supplements, including tofu, tempeh, miso, edamame, and their impact on thyroid, endocrine, and hormonal health. Can overconsumption of soy cause hypothyroidism, or trigger a thyroid problem?
