From Mary Shomon, your Guide to Thyroid Disease
Dear Readers, For more than two decades, patient advocate Julia Schopick has focused on creating awareness of little known treatment approaches that have been typically been overlooked in favor of more expensive, commercial - and sometimes far less effective -- treatments for common conditions. This week, you'll find a Q&A with this tireless advocate for patient rights, as well as information about exciting new treatments for autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto's and Graves' disease. This past week, the Japanese nuclear crisis was elevated to the highest severity level, even as water and milk in the U.S. started to show higher levels of radiation. Find out more about the latest developments, and how you can protect your health. Live well, Mary

New Book Features Treatments for Thyroid, Autoimmune Disease
Julia Schopick's new book "Honest Medicine," focuses on four overlooked treatments -- the ketogenic diet for pediatric epilepsy; intravenous alpha lipoic acid for terminal liver disease and some cancers; Silverlon for non-healing wounds; and finally, low-dose naltrexone (LDN) for autoimmune diseases and cancer. I had an opportunity to do a learn more from Julia about the book, and in particular, the use of low dose naltrexone for autoimmune conditions, including thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's and Graves' disease. I know you'll find her thoughts fascinating, as well as the information about this potentially promising new approach for autoimmune thyroid disease.

Protecting Yourself and Your Thyroid From Radiation
Reports came in this past week indicating that due to the Japanese reactor disaster, elevated radioactive iodine levels are showing up in water, milk and some food in the U.S. Are these levels dangerous, or safe, and what sorts of things can you do to help protect yourself from radioactive iodine exposure.

Japanese Nuclear Crisis Rated a 7 Like Chernobyl
Japanese officials have announced that they upgraded the severity of the Fukushima nuclear accident from a 5 to the maximum of 7, the highest rating given to a nuclear accident. The IAEA describes a level 7 event as "a major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures". The only nuclear accident ever rated 7 by the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) has been Chernobyl, which took place almost 25 years ago, on April 26, 1986. Find out what this means for you.

Could You Have Hypothyroidism?
Sometimes, the easiest way to communicate with your doctor is to outline in a straightforward way the issues and symptoms that you are facing. And what better way than a risks and symptoms checklist!? Here's a handy summary of key risks of hypothyroidism, and symptoms of an underactive thyroid. You may find it useful to print it out, and bring a copy to your next doctor's appointment to help get a diagnosis, or help optimize your thyroid treatment.
