From Mary Shomon, your Guide to Thyroid Disease
Dear Readers,

Every day, I receive emails and Facebook wall posts from thyroid patients who are frustrated about their inability to lose weight while hypothyroid, or unexpected weight gain despite thyroid treatment. Diet and weight loss concerns are often front and center for many thyroid patients. So this week, I've put together a simple step by step list to guide you through the key resources here at the site to help.

Did you know that your morning cup of coffee may be the reason why you don't feel well on your thyroid medication? Find out more about this important research finding.

Should we all be terrified of the Japanese radiation? Downing iodine pills and waiting for Armageddon, or ignoring it entirely, because it's a non-issue. The answer depends on which "expert" you listen to.

Is Hashimoto's disease the same thing as hypothyroidism? If you have an underactive thyroid, are do you automatically have Hashimoto's? This question comes up regularly, and it's answered this week.

Live well,

Mary

Thyroid Diet Information, Support, Solutions for Weight Loss
Since the site launched in 1997, I've been talking about diet and weight loss, but some of you are new to the site, or haven't had time to explore the thousands of pages here. So if you are a thyroid patient who is trying to lose weight, or you find yourself gaining weight despite no change in diet or exercise, here is a step by step list of places to start your journey back toward wellness and a healthy weight.

A Warning About Coffee and Your Thyroid Medication
If the first thing you do in the morning -- before you even take your thyroid pills -- is reach for a cup of coffee or espresso, it's time to think about a change in your morning routine. Researchers in several studies are showing that drinking coffee or espresso at the same time as taking your morning thyroid pill could cause problems in your thyroid treatment.

Japanese Meltdown: Different Perspectives Cause Confusion
Rising radiation levels in soil and seawater around the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant seem to suggest a meltdown. Meanwhile, concerns are rising about the radioactive dangers from the troubled plant, and whether the radiation may be harmful to the health of people outside Japan. And if so, how do those of us not in Japan protect ourselves against radiation? Do we even need to?

Hashimoto's vs. Hypothyroidism: What's the Difference?
Hashimoto's disease is a disease, and hypothyroidism is a condition. Hypothyroidism is most commonly "caused" by Hashimoto's disease, but the two terms are not interchangeable. So what's the difference?
